Ministry of Employment Selects 12,455 Promising SMEs Tailored to Youth Employment Needs
Credit Rating, Employment Stability, Growth Potential
The Ministry of Employment has announced the selection of 12,455 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as "small but strong enterprises" for the year 2015, recommended for youth employment. This represents a 28.5% increase compared to the 9,692 SMEs selected as such last year. The Ministry of Employment stated that among the 46,000 candidate companies, selection criteria included company credit rating, history of wage payment, industrial accident rate, and employment stability.
Small but strong enterprises tailored to the needs of the youth
This year's selected SMEs include 8,015 manufacturing companies, accounting for 64.3%, followed by 1,962 wholesale and retail companies (15.8%), and 984 companies in information services such as publishing, broadcasting, and telecommunications (7.9%). In terms of the number of permanent employees, there are 1,686 companies with over 100 employees, 2,344 companies with 50-100 employees, 2,964 companies with 30-50 employees, and 5,461 companies with fewer than 30 employees.
A survey conducted by the Korea Labor Institute in December last year targeting the youth showed that 83% found the information on small but strong enterprises obtained from WorkNet to be helpful, and 73% reported a change in perception towards local businesses after accessing information on such enterprises. The government analyzed that the significant increase in youth employment could be attributed to the selection of small but strong enterprises since 2012, the establishment of a dedicated page for such enterprises on WorkNet in 2014, and active promotion of this information by employment centers, local governments, universities, and others.
Companies selected as small but strong enterprises receive tailored recruitment support services, preferential treatment as military service exempt companies, selection for employment creation support programs, and preferential treatment for participating in youth internship programs, along with financial support.
Park Hwajin, Policy Officer for Youth Female Employment at the Ministry of Employment, stated that this year's selection of small but strong enterprises prioritized the perspective of the youth and emphasized the importance of encouraging young people to take an interest in such enterprises.
